"Until we learn to grieve, our song's still out of tune and we're out of time..."
I hope you find some beauty in the grief of this song. I began writing it in the grips of last year's Black Summer bushfires. If we allow ourselves to tap in and feel the grief that both the humans and non-humans (ie. plants, animals, rivers, ecosystems etc.) around the world are experiencing in these precariously unbalanced times - whether around climate, ecological breakdown or sociopolitical fragmentation - as this can be powerful in building empathy and compassion, which is fundamental to being able to work together to overcome challenges.
The notion of being out of balance is the other, more subtle message in this song, with the double-meaning of 'Out of Time' implying, not that we have run out of opportunities to do something for our fragile planet and her inhabitants, but rather, that we are actually just 'out-of-sync' with each other and our living world and need to find harmony and alignment in order to restore a sense of stability.
Massive thanks to the peeps who contributed footage to the music vid: Matt Allworth, Lisa DeBande, Brenna Quinlan, Tom Richardson and Chris from Alleged Arts Collective & Frontline Action on Coal and to all of our Patreon supporters for making this project possible.
lyrics
The flames are growing higher
And the house has started burning
But the smokescreen of denial
Keeps us stranded on this journey
The winds are getting stronger
And the temperature is rising
And I wonder how much longer
Til we all start realising
We’re out of time
Give praise all those who try
When so many are afraid
To hear the distant cry
Of the land from which we’ve strayed
I want to believe, believe, believe
That despair is here too soon
But until we learn to grieve
Our song’s still out of tune
And we’re out of time
We’re out of time
But instead of clinging, clinging, clinging
To what we have left
I’m gonna keep singing, singing, singing
Til I’m out of breath
The answer is ringing, ringing, I’m feeling it deep in my chest
But when the rhythm falls away
There’s still notes left to play
But they’re patiently saying
Not Just Charlie is a defiant act of grief & praise. It is
a personal exercise in what Charlie has termed ‘emotional composting’ - as we stare down the barrel of around issues such as climate and ecological breakdown and social disconnection....more
